GIS Models for Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning: Current Use, Future Needs and Potentials

GIS models are currently available for a broad range of applications in mobility planning. However, it is not known how widespread the current use among European urban planners, nor what their user experiences and needs are. There therefore risk that development planning will be mainly driven by technical possibilities data availability rather than prospective users. To inform model developers ensure good match between options needs, we conducted survey investigating application practice Europe as well priorities planners regarding models. We received 51 valid responses from transport departments 42 cities 21 countries. For GIS-based traffic models, findings indicate there scope wider adoption further improvement. The used considered useful to support planning, but more 60% surveyed do yet them. Increased user-friendliness, particular non-experts, appears important promote adoption. Availability non-traditional types data, such real-time or at neighborhood level, still limited most cities, this may rapidly change. Finally, also considerable interest integrate social environmental aspects.
